Bower Bailey frequently exchanges confidential information with clients by e-mail. To ensure the confidential information we send is kept secure and only read by the intended recipients we operate “Secure e-Mail”. To help explain how this works we have set out some questions and answers below.

How does Secure e-Mail work?

It uses software (called Egress) that encrypts e-mail messages and their attachments. Encryption effectively scrambles the content of e-mails and attachments so they cannot be read without the recipient entering a password. The password is like a key and once entered it decrypts or unscrambles the content so it can be read as normal.

How do I open a secure e-Mail?

Firstly, click on “Open secure email” which will open a secure web page at egress.com. It should have a padlock (shown in your browser) and look like this:

It is important to check you also have a padlock on your browser.

Secondly, enter the password you will have received from us and you should then be able to read the e-mail and any attachments as normal.

How will the password be communicated to me?

We will have sent a text (SMS) message to the mobile phone number you have provided to us. The message will look like this:

 

“Message from Bower Bailey LLP: Your secure password for e-mail address (YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS) is: (PASSWORD) For further information visit http://www.bowerandbailey.co.uk/securemail ** Please note: Replies to this number are not monitored. **”

 

Please do NOT send your password to anyone else by e-mail or save it in your e-mail system. If you do, you will have compromised the security of e-mails and attachments as they could be read by hackers if they gain access to your email system and find your password.

Can I use secure e-Mail to reply securely?

Yes, and we strongly recommend that you do when communicating any personal or financial details to us. However, to do this you will need to have an account on the Egress platform.

Simply click on the reply button which you will see at the top right of your screen when you have opened the secure e-mail (by clicking on “read this secure email”) as explained above.

  • If you already have an Egress account, enter your usual log in details.
  • If you don’t have an Egress account you will be prompted to register to obtain one. (It is free of charge). The process is very straightforward and will take about a minute to complete.

Mobile and Desktop App

If you communicate with us frequently by e-mail you may find it more convenient to download the Egress Application (App). This will enable you to read e-mails and attachments you receive from us without having to enter your password each time, and also to reply securely.

There is an App available for all of the leading mobile platforms as well as Windows and Apple Mac desktop and laptop PCs. These can be found by searching your app store for egress on your mobile device or visiting: www.egress.com/downloads
