Private Client Partner Q&A

28th March 2022

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 we are highlighting some of Bower Bailey’s successful female achievers. Here we chat to Alison Hill, Partner in our Private Client department in Swindon.

Tell us about your role at Bower Bailey?

I am a partner in the Swindon office and specialise in wills, probate and conveyancing.

What do you enjoy about working at Bower Bailey?

It is difficult to balance working on your own and having too many petty office rules and regulations. I hope that we have got the balance right for everyone. There is plenty of support if you need it. There is a great atmosphere in the office and it is fun to be here. If I didn’t enjoy it I wouldn’t be here!

Have there been any challenges in your career as a woman in law?

Quite a few. I was one of the first partners to have children so it was difficult to persuade my male colleagues that you can have children and still work effectively.

Has the workplace changed for women during your career? If so, how?

Absolutely. I believe employers are much more willing to discuss how they and their employees can work effectively together especially when women have children. Allowing flexible working hours can make a huge amount of difference to a mother. A happy employee is a productive employee.

Lastly, do you have any top tips or a word of advice for young female lawyers at the start of their careers?

I do believe it is still difficult, even now, being a female solicitor so you have to be strong and resilient.
